Jaw Pain Caulfield North

Chew in Peace with our Jaw Pain Treatments

At More Than Physio, our uniquely focused Clinic – Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre™ has been specifically established to deliver an effective physiotherapy & osteopathy approach for the treatment of jaw and face pain sufferers living throughout Melbourne’s South East and beyond. Often related to stress, the clenching and grinding of the jaw and teeth (also known as bruxing) can be a common cause of pain that affects the muscles and joints surrounding the mandible (jaw bone). Conditions related to these symptoms are called TMD (temporomandibular disorder) or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder and can affect general face and neck pain as well as various types of headaches if occurring over a continued time period. Thanks to our experienced physiotherapists & osteopaths with specific training, we are able to offer treatments for the relief of debilitating ear pain, face pain, headaches and jaw pain, to Caulfield North clients and other residents in the surrounding suburbs.

For Effective Relief from Jaw and Face Pain, Trust More Than Physio (and our specially focussed Clinic – Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre™)

Help for Jaw Clicking and Face Pain

Not all physiotherapists or osteopaths have a special interest in treating TMJ disorder. The jaw and mouth are often thought to be the domain of the dental profession alone and so many physiotherapists and osteopaths shy away from working inside the mouth. Adding to the complexity, the mechanical relationship between the neck and jaw are not well understood, making this a particularly difficult and specialised area of treatment often requiring more than just a traditional dental approach. More Than Physio – through our on-site clinic – Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre™ – provides very specific physiotherapy treatment for face pain and related symptoms, neck pain, headaches and jaw pain to Caulfield North, Prahran, South Yarra, Toorak, Caulfield, Bentleigh and McKinnon residents. Our physiotherapists and osteopaths at the Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre™ have extensive experience managing TMJ (jaw) conditions and face pain and work closely with other medical and dental specialists when required. TMD is very prevalent – affecting 12 percent of the population and our on-site clinic enjoys referral from dentists, GPs, oral medicine specialists, prosthodontists, endodontists, periodontists, ENTs, rheumatologists, neurologists and oral & maxillofacial surgeons.

Discovering the Causes of Jaw Clicking and Locking

Jaw Clicking or Locking

Jaw (TMJ) clicking is a sign that the small protective disc inside the jaw joint may be moving in an abnormal way or be located in the incorrect position relative to the condyle (end of the jaw bone) on top of which it should sit, requiring the condyle-disc complex to re-align or shift to allow full opening to occur. This results in a distinct click.

The sensation that the jaw is about to lock in a closed position or an increased difficulty opening the jaw with more resistance or a louder click indicates a worsening of the jaw mechanics and should be addressed with very specific therapy. Jaw locking (when you cannot open more than 1-2 fingers width) should be seen to immediately to prevent more permanent damage. Locked jaws that persist for more than 2 weeks become increasingly more likely to remain locked. Very specific physiotherapy & osteopathic techniques at our clinic, Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre™, may assist you to unlock your jaw and address the mechanics that have led to your jaw dysfunction in the first place.

Treating Teeth Grinding and Alleviating Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)

Bruxism Treatment

Bruxism (or teeth grinding) is an annoying and potentially damaging disorder. Though bruxism is quite common, it is not always treated correctly, as this involuntary jaw movement can have a number of causes (in the case of secondary bruxism) or no identifiable cause (in the case of primary bruxism).

When considering bruxism treatment, Caulfield North and Glen Iris locals can rely on the Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre™ to look closely at the possible causes and effects of bruxism for a holistic approach to treatment.

One bruxism treatment Caulfield North, Toorak and Glen Iris locals may consider is a dental splint. This is an effective method for protecting the teeth, and can be helpful to unload the TMJ and overworked muscles, especially in primary bruxism where there is no known cause to treat.

If, however, bruxism is a symptom of a sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) then treatment with a dental splint must be considered carefully, as it may not provide the best relief, and treatment with a poorly designed or poorly chosen splint may actually obstruct the airways further. This is where a differently designed splint known as Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) may be needed to reposition the bottom jaw forwards to open/protect the airway as well as treat the bruxism.

With MAS bruxism treatments, Glen Iris, Toorak, Ashburton, Caulfield, Prahran and Caulfield North patients may find relief from the painful effects of teeth grinding and OSA, only to discover that the forced repositioning of their jaw has led to jaw pain, earaches, or headaches. This is one of the many important reasons for examining the complex relationship between the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the neck and the effects of bruxing and ensuring we settle down any at-risk muscles or joints before prescribing a MAS.

Because of the complexities of bruxism’s causes and effects, we focus on treating the patient, not just the symptoms, and provide our patients with the knowledge and self-help techniques they need to become active participants in their own treatment plan. At More Than Physio (in our specially focused Clinic Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre™), you will be under the care of our specially trained TMJ & Sleep Medicine Dentists who have an understanding of this complex relationship and works closely with our TMJ Physiotherapists & TMJ Osteopaths. When required we may also involve our team GP who can assist with Muscle Relaxant Injection Therapy of botulinum (MRIT)

If you would like to learn more about available bruxism treatments, Toorak, Malvern, Ashburton, Caulfield, Prahran and Glen Iris locals can call us on 9824-8868 to make an appointment at our Caulfield North clinic.
